Michael Fish

Michael Fish, most famous for a huge hurricaine contraversy, accomplished more fame than any other weatherman. Michael Fish has sacrificed allot in the world of weather. Without Michael's contributions, (and mistakes), the world of weather forecasting wouldn't be what it is today. Mr. Fish made weather interesting by his manor of presentation. Yet despite his original occupation as a weather forecaster, Michael's name became so well known throughout England that he was seen on various Television shows and radio broadcasts. Mr. Fish was even famous enough to have a record dedicated to him by the punk group "Rachel and Nicki". The record was titled "I wish, I wish, he was like Michael Fish." Of all that Michael Fish accomplished, by far the greatest achievement that he ever made was thus his greatest mistake. A mistake so devastating that it has every weather man reconsidering his words. From Michael's catastrohpic mistake... Mr. Fish's name will be written down in the history books forever.

Life for Michael Fish began on April 27th, 1944 in Eastbourne, England. Not much is known about Michael Fish's childhood or teen years. In fact, very little is known about Michael Fish's family or how he grew up. However, having been rumored to have acted in "A Play I wrote", chances are that Michael Fish dreamed of making television appearances since childhood. Michael Fish spent his early years at the "Dolphin" school in eastbourne. He went to college at Eastbourne college, and jumped a step forward by joining The Meteorological office in November of 62. However, his first television appearance was in 1960 on Juke Box Jury. His first "posting" was at Gatwick Airport. Michael was promoted in 65 and moved up to the Met Office Headquarters in Bracknell. Not only that, but while being stationed at The London Weather Centre, he studied Applied Physics at Eastbourne. The wagon began rolling in 71 when Michael started broadcasting for BBC radio. Things got even bigger for Mr. Fish in 74 when he became apart of BBC's TV weather team. Although having a reseeding hairline, Michael Fish was at the time, the youngest weatherman ever broadcasted on BBC. With only 3 broadcasts a day throughout The United Kingdom, Michael's career slowly grew into fame throughout the world.

Major Contributions

From the year 1971, up until 2004, it is rumored that Michael Fish was the world's longest lasting weatherman. Even if not the World's longest weatherman, he was in fact Britain's longest weatherman. Which for him meant a whopping 33 years service to weather forecasting.

His contributions range from years service to weather forecasting, to being a patron for various organizations and charities. Not to mention the fact that he helped co-author a book titled "Storm Force: Britain's Wildest Weather" with Ian McCaskill and Paul Hudson. Michael Fish has perhaps dedicated his whole life to weather. He not only has been a consultant for numerous books about weather, but he helped publish articles in various weather and travel magazines, and also newspapers. But by far, his biggest contribution was yet his greatest mistake. On October 15th, 1987 what is most commonly known as "The Great Storm" struck southeast England, and northern France. 18 people were killed from these raging high winds, and much damage was caused. The storm left several thousand people without electricity. It took out an estimated 15 million trees and blocked up numerous roads and highways. However, Michael Fish was quoted saying “Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way; well, if you’re watching, don’t worry, there isn’t, but having said that, actually, the weather will become very windy, but most of the strong winds, incidentally, will be down over Spain and across into France.” When asked about it later on, Michael Fish said that he was referring to Florida in his broadcast. However no such mentioning of Florida was found in his broadcast. Michael Fish's fame skyrocketed after this devastating mistake. He has lead many forecasters to take a closer look at what they're about to say.

Legacy

Michael Fish was best known for his Hurricane Controversy of 1987. Or in other words, his big "Whoops!". Through Michael Fish's immense mistake, which resulted in the loss of 18 lives and left thousands to possibly millions of dollars worth of damage to England, weatherman have learned to think before they speak. And maybe even, weather men have learned to listen to women who call up and say that a storm is coming. Weathermen have most certainly learned not to disregard other people's insights, but most importantly...they've learned to learn from their own, and even other's mistakes. (Especially Michael's.) From winning the Worst and Best Dressed awards, to acting in various plays and performances (A Play I Wrote), Michael Fish has inspired many people. Although retired, Michael Fish will still remembered if not through his mistakes and successes, but from his influences on the media (such as Rachel and Niki's album "I wish I wish he was like Michael Fish"). Michael Fish has spent many years fulfilling his dreams (such as getting to conduct a train). If he hasn't taught people to listen before they speak, then he has taught them to live life to its fullest. Regardless of Michael's old age and bald head, he's done even the most unthinkable things for men and women his age. He's taught others to have fun and not to let their mistakes get the best of him. When asked about his Hurricane Controversy, Michael simply blew it off with "If I was given a penny for every time I heard something about that forecast, then I'd be a millionaire.". As of Michael's current days in happy retirement, he's been rumored to still be acting in stage performances. Which not only inspires old folks his age to get out there and live while they can, but his actions have influenced even teenagers not to get discouraged over their age, race, creed, ect. If Michael Fish can do it, anyone can do it.
